This comic was a real wonder for the eye, one of the technically best works I’ve seen from author and artist Natalia Batista.
The story expresses some interesting views of gender-roles, but for me appeared a bit shallow. I’m looking forward to see how it develops!

Been following the development of this for a while now and had high hopes that it would be cool, but I was pleasantly surprised that the first chapter managed to exceed my expectations.

First of all, the drawings are gorgeous and well detailed. I really enjoyed the complex armor/clothing of the heroine and hope we will see more enemies/monsters clad in armor drawn with the same care and attention to detail. The pacing in the big fight happening in chapter 1 was excellent and exciting too – with quite a few dramatic angles to add power to the imagery. Good stuff. The backgrounds tend to be a bit bland, this could be an artistic choice however to put more emphasis on the action. In the slower/more story-driving scenes I wouldn’t mind backgrounds treated the same way as the characters. And hopefully that Chris Crocker-guy at the end grows some hair and gets some heavy shoulderpads and a furcoat soon!

Storywise I am very happy that the first chapter is little talking and lots of hacking and slashing. Not that there isn’t a whole lot of dialogue, but it’s lighthearted and fun, even hilarious in a couple of instances. I insta-liked Amalthea who seems to fight for all the right reasons: the glory of battle, attention of peers and GOLD!
At times she gives of a strong “Slayers”-vibe, which is a-okay in my book.

I don’t care much about the whole gender-twist (I am no stranger to strong female characters, ever since I was introduced to Chun-Li and Red Sonja ages ago) as long as the action is good, the talking is straight to the point and people don’t waste my time with romance-kitsch I am cool with sword princesses rescuing Chris Crocker.

I just hope that this first chapter is a proper taste of things to come & expect from the adventures of the Sword Princess. I am looking forward to more of it now, hopefully with the same fighting to story-ratio as this teaser’s got going.
